The French Community of Belgium universities produce rich and heterogeneous contents including research data, scientific literature, images, audio and video files, departmental reports and online lessons. Started in December 2004, the project “Institutional repositories” aims - on the three university consortia level - to put an institutional repository at teachers and researchers’ disposal. Long-term, the project will allow online promotion and diffusion of various scientific works, managed in self-service by the authors from the universities, in forms of "communities".

By the association of human competences and suitable technical tools, the project "Institutional repositories" aims to lodge the French Community of Belgium universities' intellectual production in a reliable and definitive way and to ensure its diffusion. This production must integrate a sufficient flexibility to accommodate heterogeneous contents and to allow varied accesses and different uses. This multi-annual project gives a durable and accessible option for a coordinated evolution of the institutional repositories in an architecture which takes note of the French Community of Belgium academic education's new landscape.
