This event took place at the University of Namur

In an ever-changing world marked by globalisation, urbanisation, climate change, and technological advances, geographers are at the forefront of a transformative journey. The discipline of geography has long been associated with the study of landscapes, places, and spatial patterns. In the 21st century, however, geographers are in transition, adapting their traditional roles, tools, and methodologies to address the complex challenges of our modern era.

This transition is not merely an academic or theoretical exercise. It reflects the evolving role of geographers in addressing the pressing issues that shape our planet and societies. As the boundaries between physical and human geography blur, and as interdisciplinary approaches become increasingly important, geographers are positioned as invaluable contributors to understanding and addressing some of the most critical issues of our time.

In this meeting ‘Geographers in Transition’, we will explore the changing landscape of geographical research and practice. We will examine how geographers are embracing new technologies, harnessing unconventional data sources, and collaborating across disciplines to provide insights into issues such as climate adaptation, energy crisis, urban planning, nature conservation and cultural preservation. We will also explore how geographers are actively engaged in policy-making, the governance of sustainability efforts, and disaster management, playing a key role in shaping our collective response to contemporary challenges.

This meeting aims to provide the opportunity for young people to meet and discuss their works. Join us on a journey through the evolving world of geographers and discover the innovative ways in which they -including you- are contributing to a more resilient world.

This event is sponsored by the FNRS, the FNRS thematic doctoral school "geography" and the UNamur FSR special research fund.

The purpose of the Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.–FNRS) is to develop fundamental scientific research within the framework of initiatives presented by researchers. It encourages the production and development of knowledge by both supporting individual researchers, and also by financing research programmes conducted in the laboratories and facilities mostly located in the universities of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.  More information on the F.R.S.–FNRS website...
